Writing is Elementary.

If you blog, you understand the frustration of not knowing what to write about. There are probably things that you thought of only hours, maybe even minutes ago, that totally escape you now that you’re in front of a computer and able to get them into a more visceral form. If you’re on twitter, you’ve probably posted about it, much like Lauren did the other day. It started a fun conversation between she, Kaci and I, which ultimately ended up with me Googling “what should I write about?”

Well, just like it always does, Google came through for me!

Write Source was one of the first things to come up, and it’s kind of cute. It’s got really short prompts designed for journaling, and maybe for use in the classroom? It’s set up as though it could be for the classroom, so I went into teacher mode!

I suggested that Lauren, Kaci and I take on a grade a week for inspiration. Even though I was pretty sure that it was just the future English teacher in me who would be excited about this, and I promptly prepared myself for them to ignore the suggestion. They both went for it! Just another reason that I love the internet!

I can’t wait to pick one and get started. I might even go for two! I’m way behind on reading blogs, so these ladies may have already gotten started, but I’m going to start my more formal structure of this next week. I’m not sure exactly how it will go yet, but I’ll explain it all then. Everyone is welcome to join, how fun would it be to jump back to elementary school writing prompts, but now write about them from an adult older perspective!

Who else is joining us? Any suggestions on which I should write about?

And it begins…

I took another look at my most confusing syllabus this morning while in the corresponding class, and things made a lot more sense.

The amount of work that I’m going to have to keep up with also seemed to get even bigger, though that is the class that I will have the least amount of work outside the classroom. So while the teacher was telling one of her tangental stories, I started writing out a homework itinerary for myself. I started doing this at the end of the semester last spring, and it seemed to help.

My day was scheduled to go something like this:

break 9:55-10:30 – read Zinsser intro
class 10:30-11:45
head home 11:50-12:10
eat/get settled* 12:15-12:40
read 12:40-2:00 – 2 essays in Zinsser
walk around block 2:00-2:10
read 2:10-3:00 1 or 2 essays in Zinsser EDTE 150 article
work 3:00-8:20
-read Zinsser on break
food 8:30-9:00 make macaroni
read 9:00-9:45 EDTE 165 articles
Hunger Games 9:45-10:30
BED 11:00

I don’t actually start work until 4, but I put the extra time in for getting ready and transportation. It’s now 3:15 and I’m already ready for work, so I’ve grabbed the articles that I didn’t end up reading in the block before work and I will hopefully get through some of them before clocking on and on my 15 minute break!

I did alter the schedule a little as I went. Around 1:30 I was having trouble keeping my eyes open, even though I really liked the essay that I was reading. So I set the timer on my phone and closed my eyes for about 12 minutes while on the couch. Since I’d like the essays so much I was still able to finish my goal!

I also didn’t get to the EDTE 150 article because I was researching a Federal Work Study program that might mean I get paid for some of the schoolwork I do this semester because it involves tutoring elementary school students!

*Please note that I tried to be reasonable with not getting to work right away because if I had tried to do that, I would have ended up behind and disappointed. I’m proud of myself for having that forethought!

You may also notice that I have scheduled myself time to read the awesome novel The Hunger Games tonight because I think it’s important to have the pleasure reading in there too. Also, I really just can’t get enough of this book. I have the feeling that I’ll be finishing the trilogy throughout this semester even though I have so much reading for class as well!

I’m proud of myself for keeping pretty well to this schedule. If I can have several days like this, especially over this weekend when I have the most “free” time, I should be able to get ahead of my school work and guarantee me an awesome GPA for the semester!

Nearing the End

This week has felt pretty crazy. Last weekend and the beginning of this week I seemed to have a kind of block on writing the about 30 pages that were due over 8 papers this week. I think a big part of that came from being forced to work on one piece all day Monday when I prefer to be able to work in short bursts.

Today I’m down to 5 papers that I have to turn in tomorrow. One of which is so done that it’s got a fork sticking out of it, but another I have yet to begin. The other three I’ve made decent progress on and now I just need to get my brother over here for some truly brotherly (read brutal) editing and I’ll be just about good to go.

I’ve got so much I could say about my process and how I intend to use the rest of my day, but this is just intended to be a short break so I can trick myself into working on one paper for two of those short bursts back to back!

I will have much more to say tomorrow afternoon and this weekend once my paper writing week is over!

Positive Outlook

In going through the papers that I’ve received back from my Professor with comments and unofficial grades, I realized that the two I’ve gotten back from him are actually marked as a B- and B/C. He’s a pretty harsh grader, and I would be totally happy with a C+ in the class, especially since I don’t feel like I’ve put as much into these papers as I should have. It looks like I’m on the right path though, since I’ll be doing a bit more revision to those papers before turning them in, and I’ve done a decent amount of revision on the other two I have for that class.

I’ve still got two more papers for different classes, which are a little more involved and I need to get back to working on them now.

And yes, you read that right. I have 6 papers due before 5:00PM on Friday.
I’ve already turned in 3 papers this week.
